About
Porteus Beef
Porteus Beef is a family owned business
which has been involved in producing the highest quality
beef for three generations. The original family farm
was established by Harry Beattie and included 1000
acres at the picturesque 7 Mile Beach which was part
of the original Van Diemans Land grant of 1825.
The
Porteus family’s three farms are located in
North West Tasmania. This area of Tasmania is renowned
as one of the most productive grazing regions in
Australia, with rich healthy soils and the cleanest
air in the world. Each of the farms is situated in
its own unique environment type – rainforest,
coastal and river flats. What each farm has in common
is they have been developed to produce the highest
quality beef and have being doing so for decades.
To
achieve this level of quality the cattle are grass
fed, free of growth hormones and antibiotics and
reared to the highest standards. The cattle that
go into our premium beef burgers are raised under
strictly humane conditions and are never confined
so they can live naturally and graze freely on lush
Tasmanian pasture. To assist our cattle to put on
weight during winter we allocate a generous amount
of acreage per animal and ensure they have excellent
and plentiful hay.
In
addition to having the right environment we also
choose the finest cattle from breeds that produce
intensely flavoured and superbly marbled beef. To
achieve the best results, cattle need to be kept
as calm as possible throughout the rearing process.
We take many steps to keep our cattle calm including
cutting square bails that do not require heavy machinery
to produce. This reduces the impact on our cattle
and our paddocks. Our animals are butchered in a
manner that ensures quality and results in tender,
delicious beef.
Today
Porteus Beef remains a successful family run business
that is involved in the local community and committed
to caring for the land and their livestock.
